Best snorkeling spots in Bali

Country: Indonesia
Region: Bali
Outdoor activities: Snorkeling, scuba diving, freediving
Ranking ecotourism:écotourisme-3-SOL

Bali is world famous for its rice fields, temples, surf beaches and especially for its colorful fish. The best snorkeling spots are around Amed on the north east of the island.

The best known snorkeling and scuba diving location is certainly the wreck of the USS Liberty, at 20-minute drive north of Amed. Indeed, you can discover this wreck either diving or snorkeling (the wreck is between 5 and 35 meters deep). Park on Tulamen beach, put your mask and snorkel and dive into the warm sea. The wreck is at only 50 meters from the beach. The wreck is about 200 meters long, the most experienced free divers can dive around the wreck and closely discover hundreds of fish.

The Japanese Wreck situated on another beautiful beach, about fifteen kilometers east of Amed is worth a visit. Here too, the wreck is twenty meters from the beach and can easily be discovered with only mask, fins and snorkel. The advantage of these two wrecks is that they are accessible directly from the beach at low tide and the visibility is excellent.

Between these two wrecks are many snorkeling locations and our favorite spot is the beach of Lipie Beach. There are no big fishes but corals are in very good condition and there are plenty of small & funny fish. We also recommend Gemeluk beach with beautiful coral and many fish on both sides of the beach, there’s even an underwater temple (and for divers the wreck of a speed boat at about 30 m depth). The water on the shore of this last spot is murky (convergence currents) but just swim a few meters to have very clear water.

For the accommodation, you have lots of choice at all prices and qualities. We stayed at Onlyou Villas and we were charmed by this cozy accommodation facing the sea, ideally situated to discover the different snorkeling spots above. It is located 500 meters walk from Lipie beach and some guests even saw turtles in the waters in front of the hotel.

The snorkeling seekers will adore Amed and its seabed and you can even obtain your padi for scuba diving or freediving at a reasonable price. Stay for a few days and visit the Balinese temples : Tirta ganga one of the most beautiful in Bali. And for the Sportrotters, you try the Mount Agun (3142 m)treck. You start at midnight and arrive at the top for the sunrise. In the evening you can relax with a massage, we recommend Bali Beauty in Amed.

The pros :
Many snorkeling spots close to each other.
Housing, food and activities are quite cheap in Bali
You can enjoy culture and sport
The sun always shines Amed
You can rent a scooter and easily go to all the snorkeling loctions

The cons:
Amed is 2 to 3 hours drive from Denpasar on a very windy road!
Balinese roads are in poor condition

  1. I’m a regular visitor in Bali and can confirm that there are amazing spots for snorkeling around Amed! My personal favorites are the Kembali Beach Reef, Lipah and the Shipwreck in Tulamben!
